What BMR is
Your basal metabolic rate is the energy your body needs at complete rest to breathe, circulate blood and keep its temperature — usually 60–70% of all the calories you burn in a day.
- Mifflin-St Jeor: 10 × kg + 6.25 × cm − 5 × age + 5 (men) or − 161 (women). The most accurate for most people.
- Revised Harris-Benedict: the older standard, revised in 1984.
- Katch-McArdle: 370 + 21.6 × lean body mass (kg); best if you know your body fat percentage.
